Conventional felt pads provide a soft contact between the record and the platter, but they have the disadvantage of static electricity. This means that the felt often attracts a lot of dust, which is then transferred to the platter. The ability to dampen vibrations is also very limited, which can be a problem with metal platters.
Thick rubber backing materials excessively dampen the record and create an insulating effect, causing static electricity to remain on the record – resulting in audible clicks. Leather and cork are two different but very interesting options for nadbuilding sound quality.
They dampen resonances better than felt, prevent dust accumulation, and have enough conductivity to prevent static buildup.
Which is better depends on personal taste and the design of the platter. This is a very cost-effective way to improve sound and reduce noise from static and dust.
